Linking levee-building processes with channel avulsion: geomorphic analysis for assessing avulsion frequency and channel reoccupation

چکیده

Abstract. A natural levee is a typical wedge-shaped deposit adjacent to river channel. Given its location and distinctive features, the can serve as key revealing depositional processes of coupled channel floodplain system preserved in rock record. Levee–floodplain topographic evolution also closely linked avulsion which cause catastrophic floods. Nonetheless, geometry aggradation pattern on have not been fully incorporated study avulsion. Here, we present levee-building model using advection settling suspended sediment reproduce fluvial over floods examine effects boundary conditions grain-size trend deposit. We further investigate frequencies potential reoccupation associated with distribution overbank flux overflow velocity into floodplain, both control geometry, especially rate at crest. In modeling results, develops (1) concave-up profile, (2) an exponential decrease grain size away from main channel, (3) relatively steeper shape for coarser supply vice versa. The subsequent scaling analysis supports that input profile slope are positively correlated frequency, whereas inversely proportional frequency. connection styles suggest slopes tend promote more reoccupations preexisting channels protecting abandoned healing, but gentler levees likely create new their remnant vulnerable removal memory. insights drawn current work may thus implications reconstructing paleoenvironments regard transport flood dynamics via deposits. Based roles frequency reoccupation, hazards triggered by avulsions well alluvial architecture sedimentary records be better assessed.

Channel avulsion on alluvial fans in southern Arizona

Historical aerial photographs and field observations on five fluvially dominated alluvial fans in southern Arizona demonstrate that channel avulsion invariably occurs where bank heights are low and often at channel bends. Channel abandonment occurs through stream capture when overland flow from the main channel accelerates and directs headward erosion of smaller channels heading on the fan surf...

Face Avulsion and Degloving

There have been sparse reports in literature of avulsion and degloving injuries of individual areas of face like the nose, eyelids, ear and even mandible. Hemi-facial degloving is extremely rare. We present a case of post-assault degloving of the nose, part of forehead with anterior wall of frontal sinus, entire upper and lower eyelids and the cheek. Proper planning and staging of the surgical ...

Scalp Avulsion Combined with Unusual Severe Open Craniocerebral Avulsion Injury

2839 Correspondence To the Editor: Scalp avulsion is a severe type of scalp injury, which is most often caused when long, braided hair is caught in running wheels. However, scalp avulsion combined with an open skull avulsion fracture is extremely rare. Here we report a unique case of scalp avulsion combined with open craniocerebral injury. A 19‑year‑old female was transferred to our emergency d...

Fluvial fan deltas: Linking channel processes with large-scale morphodynamics

[1] Alluvial fan deltas are built by aggrading and avulsing river channels. A numerical model of flow and sediment transport in channels is combined with a condition for channel avulsion to describe evolution of the fan surface. The model combines elements of two recent approaches: (1) diffusional models of depositional basin filling, which describe the evolution of overall morphology, and (2) ...
